Mexico City, Days 2 & 3 – Silver & Gold

Day 2

mx5

Monday we made our way to charming picturesque town of Taxco, about 2 hours outside of the city. This town is nestled in a hill side with its old buildings and cobblestone streets, and is most famous for its silver mines and a beautiful baroque church, Iglesia de Santa Prisca

This church has intricate ornate detailing, both inside and out, and is home to two rare paintings; one of a pregnant Virgin Mary, and another of the circumcisions of Jesus Christ.

Day 3

My mom and I got as early as a start as we could, and decided to check out the Zocalo which is the historic center of Mexico City and home to the Palacio Nacional, Catedral Metropolitana, and Templo Mayor (to name a few).

mx7

We started at the Palacio Nacional which stands as the executive palace and government offices to Mexico, upon entering, Diego Rivera’s ‘Epic of the Mexican People’ is displayed on the left wall. From the National Palace we walked over to the Cathedral which I learned is the largest in the western hemisphere and took nearly 3 centuries to build. We went up to the bell towers and had an impressive view of the Zocalo. Our next two stops were Templo Mayor, an Aztec temple which was only recently uncovered (about 1971 I believe) by accident. From there we had lunch at Casa de las Sirenas, a beautiful and brilliantly colored restaurant where we enjoyed modern takes on classic Mexican dishes.

There is still so much more to see! Because of which I have extended my trip an extra 2 days to take in as much more as I possibly can. Now it’s time to get ready for dinner, more mango margaritas perhaps?
