So here are some pictures as promised from my very recent trip to New York City. I was lucky enough to be amongst the group of editors from our newspaper The Mountaineer and our magazine Substance (in which I am Managing Editor) who were chosen to go. The conference held in Times Square by College Media Advisers is among the largest collection of student journalist and media professionals in the nation, which meets once a year in the spring in New York City. I had the great opportunity to meet with editors from The New York Times, The New Yorker, Associated Press, and other industry professions from schools and established publications.

After work comes much needed play. I’d get up early to go to sessions and by the late afternoon my friend David, who is a hair stylist living in the city, was nice enough to take time out of his day and show me around. The first day out was insane since it happened to be the hurricane of 2010, but I wasn’t going to let gusty winds and pounding rain keep me from my Soho shopping experience. The details of my purchases will need a whole different post alone, but I found a few essential pieces that I cannot wait to share.

The trip has inspired me and made me realize that there is no other place I could possibly finish my schooling. I’m shifting gears to apply to schools in NYC and I couldn’t be more excited, it just all feels like it’s happening so fast.

A special thank you to my friend David Lopez (in the last picture) who took these fabulous photos to document my trip, and all around showing me an amazing time. Please check out his website, his work is amazing and I have to make an appointment for a cut & color the next time I’m in the city :)

Oh and yes, the 6th picture of me IS in front of Carries stoop. I don’t care if it’s cheesy or too fan boy but everything I know about New York is from Sex and the City. I know the series foreword and backward and it would have been a sin to be in Manhattan and not pay homage to Carries apartment.

Lots of exciting things happening for fashion lovers in the coming months. The highly anticipated return of Project Runway is finally back after a two year hiatus due to a legal battle of ownership between networks. The show will premiere August 20th at its new home on the Lifetime station. So far the promo videos have been very emotional and sappy, and, well, very Lifetime. This new video however should actually get people excited about the new season!

I also checked out The Sartorialist this morning and found out that Scott Schuman’s new Book, The Sartorialist which is a collection of photographs posted on his blog, will be out in a couple of weeks! I pre-ordered my copy this morning and am very excited about this book. I have an ‘inspiration’ folder on my desktop where I keep favorite images, many of them taken by Shuman, so it will be nice to have them in print. I mean, who doesn’t want to be shot by The Sartorialist? ;)

Now after having said that last line I simply had to share this brilliant guide to making it onto The Sartorialist from Refinery 29

ahaha, someday. Now I have to get out of this heat! I’m melting like a snow cone in Phoneix! (10pts to anyone who catches that refrence)

Last night was the big Venus Revisited event at Resurrection, which we spent the last few weeks preparing and grueling over. Everything went over pretty smoothly and we had quite the turn out. My post was to greet guest as they came and to show them in. So who was among the first to arrive? None other than style icon, and personal sex god, Tom Ford. So I tried to keep my cool as I greeted him into the event.

As he came out to pick up his car from valet I knew it was now or never, this was my chance. I casually walk over and asked if he had enjoyed the portraits and he started talking,

I was so dazed I can’t even remember what he said. Then I told him that I was wearing him (his fragrance) he looked at me, laughed and said “well you must smell good then”. Yes, I am embarrassing, but I don’t care, I MET TOM FORD. This totally made the next three excruciating hours of my post worth it.

A most unforgettable of evenings.

Once front-woman of the hit band Rilo Kiley, singer/songwriter Jenny Lewis graced Pomona with her presence last night at The Glass House. Noted for her stylish stage presence and love for vintage fashion, Jenny took the stage wearing high waisted tweed boy shorts with a matching blazer, and green plaid vest. Her sweet redish brown locks cascading from her wide brimmed fedora onto the lapel of her jacket. Although it wasn’t Jenny’s understadedly chic outfit that stole the show last night, as once she started singing everything else seemed to sort of melt away.

Child actress-turned singer, Jenny Lewis appeared in tons of movies including Troop Beverly Hills, and Pleasentville (and most recently as the assistant director to Bolt). In 1998 she and her friends formed the indie rock group Rilo Kiley. Since, she has contributed vocals to The Postal Service, and took off her solo career with the album Rabbit Fur Coat in 2006.

In 2008 she released her second solo album Acid Tounge and is currently on tour.

I was FINALY able to see her live last night, and my god does that woman have talent. She is one of my favorite artist and I truley consider her to be one of the last great lyricist. You know, when music actually had substance and wasn’t just formulated for chart-topping-club-mega-hits?

If you haven’t listened to her yet, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR!
